{ "The Happiness Project" by Gretchen Rubin }
I'm sure you've heard of this book by now, it's made its way across the blog world over the past few months, but I was still hesitant to make the purchase. As I searched on Amazon to make the purchase, I couldn't get over the "self help" category that it was in - did I really need a self help book? But as I continued to see "The Happiness Project" pop up on my favorite blogs, I finally decided to take the plunge.
Happiness is something that I continuously struggle with. While I'm beyond grateful of everything I have accomplished so far, my family and friends and even all of the tangible items I have to show for myself, it just never seems to be enough. It's not a matter of comparing myself to anyone else or of jealousy, it's just the constant feeling of wanting more and already being a step ahead thinking about what's next, rather than savoring the moment and feeling happy.
When the new year rolled around one of my major goals for this year was to focus on being happy more, feeling satisfied and slowing down a bit. "The Happiness Project" has been not only a great read, but has given me a new perspective on things following the author's twelve areas of focus. The story is told through the author's own experiences, which makes it read like a novel full of life lessons (I had expected a stereotypical "self help" writing style with a very dry, scholarly voice). I think it's a book that everyone could benefit from - even the smallest changes to your every day could make the world of difference overall.
I've been debating about this one too. I'm not a fan of self help books, so I'm glad you endorse it. Sounds like a good read.
ReplyDeleteLet me know what you think! You should definitely pick it up.
ReplyDeleteI'm also about half way through! I always take forever to read any book where the chapters aren't directly related and you don't have that hook to keep reading along. Love it so far though and it's been a huge help to adjust my thinking about things.
ReplyDeleteI am also reading this book - about half-way through - and am similarly inspired! Perhaps something about being half-way through the year now...? I recently wrote about happiness on my blog, too, and really appreciated your thoughts since I have been thinking a lot about this lately! :) www.lumierepure.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI'm totally going to read that book. Hope you get what you want out of it!
ReplyDeleteI'm reading this too -- I love it so far. What chapter are you on/what do you think? I am constantly earmarking pages -- especially in the section devoted to work/life balance!
ReplyDeleteI have to read this. Like you, I struggle with happiness from time to time and I could really use a new perspective. Thanks for the recommendation!

I totally understand where you're coming from, I set a similar goal for the new year. Just yesterday, I got a notification from the library that I had finally reached the top of the Kindle waiting list for this book and it was ready for download. I'm definitely looking forward to reading it! We'll have to compare notes!
ReplyDeleteMy original plan was to hold of on reading 50 Shades of Grey while in labor, but now I'm making a list of other books. This has been on my list for awhile and I think it's finally time to bite the bullet. Thanks for the recommendation.
