DIY // color-blocked succulent gardens.
Summer seems to be the time for activity – people are moving to new homes, parties are being thrown and you’re left scrambling for a gift to bring along for the hosts almost every weekend. Bottles of wine or candles can get old after awhile, plus both can be easy to mess up since flavors and scents are a very personal preference. But plants? Plants can do no wrong and instantly bring a little life into any home (especially great as a housewarming gift!)
So what’s the secret to getting to the top of everyone’s favorite guest list? Mini succulent gardens in color blocked pots. They’re cute and best of all, super easy to care for.
The supplies:
- Sample sized jars of your favorite interior paint (pictured, Glidden’s Onyx Black)
- Decorative acrylic paints
- Painter’s tape
- Paint brushes
- Variety of succulent plants
- Terracotta pots
- Potting soil
- River stones
The steps:
- Tape off a section of your flower pots using Painter’s Tape where you’d like your pop of color to be (I taped off a section that was about the width of two tape strips)
- Paint your pots in your main color (in my case, Glidden’s Onyx Black)
- Wait for paint to fully dry and remove Painter’s Tape
- Use Painter’s Tape to cover border around unpainted section – paint unpainted section with accent color. Let paint fully dry before removing Painter’s Tape
- Place small amount of river stones at bottom of each terracotta pot (helpful for drainage for dessert plants like succulents). Cover stones with potting soil, leaving about 2/3 of the pot for plants and remaining soil
- Remove succulents from pots and break up root ball. If plants have multiple stems, you can break these and plant small sections of multiple succulent varieties to create a garden feel vs. only one plant in a pot
- Once you are happy with your succulent arrangements, fill pots with additional soil, pressing down to secure plants in place
- Sprinkle with water and place in a sunny area
